How To Build A Social Media Following From Scratch

Friday 15th of October 2021

Are you looking to grow your social media following?

The common issue with using social media for marketing is growing an engaged following. Ideally, you want to have a page with as many likes and followers as possible, which is not always simple.

In this post, we’ll share ten social media tips to increase following from nothing.

1) Optimise Your Pages

Your profile photo, cover image and information about your business are the first things potential followers will see.

That’s why it needs to be fully optimised. It needs to be easily recognisable across all your social media profiles and digital touchpoints. When no information is available, there will be a disconnect, making it harder for customers to find you online and connect with you.

Ensure that all your profile images, cover photos and content meet professional standards - follow the image size guide

Also, make sure that your bios on each platform are filled out with the correct business information. The last thing you’d want to do is lead your customers to the wrong place, or nowhere!

2) Practice Social Listening

Social listening is the process of monitoring conversations online about your brand, industry and audience. By tracking specific keywords, topics, competitors, and niches will give your a birds-eye view of what content and campaigns you need to create that your audience will actually be interested in.

But, it doesn’t just end there.

Social listening offers businesses a tool to find new followers. Rik Courtney demonstrates how easy it can be to find and engage with potential followers on Instagram in this video.

3) Deliver Value

Along with identifying what your audience would value through Social Listening, understanding your Value Proposition is key to growing your following on social media.

Your business needs to give potential followers a reason to follow. If you want people to pay attention to you and engage with your business on social media, you need to show them how your business will improve their lives.

Ask yourself, what value can you serve your audience on social media that will make their lives better?

4) Follow Trends

Keep up to date with the latest news and trends. It will help you create content aligned to them to further resonate with your audience.

An example of this would be creating or sharing a popular meme or talking about the latest news within your industry that you think your audience would find interesting.

Trends and news are constantly changing. An easy way to keep on top of it is by using Twitter. Yes, that app is in the corner of your phone with cobwebs. It’s a really insightful tool to find the latest trending topics and gives a good understanding of people’s views on those topics.

5) Use Eye-catching Visuals

Bold, bright and colourful visuals help to get fingers to stop scrolling. Additionally, use relatable, familiar imagery that represents your audience’s interests. Content with relevant images gets 94% more views, and video generates 80% more conversions

6) Write Attractive Copy

Not only does your image need to represent your audience, but so does your language and tone of voice. By tailoring it to your audience, you’ll grab their attention due to specific keywords and phrases that your audience will use and understand clearly.

7) Entertain, Educate & Inspire

People are on social media to be social. That means your business needs to post to be more social, not just to sell.

By following the framework, entertain, educate and inspire, you’ll serve valuable and relatable content that people can connect with. It will also help humanise your brand. After all, people want to connect with people!

8) Use Hashtags

Boost your discovery by using industry hashtags that your ideal audience would use to find your product or service.

Remember, you need to use the following number of hashtags on each platform:

Facebook: 3-5

LinkedIn: 1-3

Twitter: 1-2

Instagram: A recent post shared by Creators states that we need to use 3-5 hashtags, which is a massive drop from its original 30. Other digital gurus suggest 5-10. From this information, I would recommend using a mix.

9) Paid Advertising

Levelling up your followers sometimes involves a bit of ad spend. It's actually one of the best ways to grow your audience if done well. Due to its detailed targeting, you can reach new people in no time, and most importantly, the right people! To get you on the starting line, we recommend a minimum of £5 per day or £150 p/m on Facebook Ads.

10) Competitions

Competitions are a popular, effective way to get many people flocking to your social media pages. Who doesn't like to win something? A little bit of engagement is a small price to pay for it.
